If you operate — or are opening — a surgical or procedural facility outside a hospital in Alberta, you'll need CPSA non-hospital surgical facility (NHSF) accreditation before you can provide care. What is CPSA NHSF accreditation?

In Alberta, the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) accredits non-hospital surgical facilities. Accreditation is how CPSA confirms your facility is safe to deliver surgical and procedural care: that your policies, infection prevention & control, equipment, sterilization, staffing, and quality systems all meet the standard — verified both on paper and through an on-site assessment.

It isn't a one-time certificate. Facilities are reassessed on a cycle, so the real goal isn't "pass the survey" — it's to build a program that stays compliant between cycles.

What CPSA looks at

While every facility is different, accreditation generally spans:

  • Governance and policies — clear, current, facility-specific documentation
  • Infection prevention & control (IPC) — practices, monitoring, and evidence
  • Sterilization and reprocessing of reusable devices
  • Medication and equipment handling and maintenance

1. Start with an honest gap assessment
